CB Babes do so Well
Cadoxton Barry Youth? 0- 1 Cogan Coronation 2nds
..............................................Harris
On 19th Feb,1958 Manchester Utd played their first game following the Munich air disaster. The majority of their players were teenagers guided and encouraged by a couple of plane crash survivors (Foulks and Gregg) and senior reserve players. Their first team regulars had either passed on or were convalescing at home or in hospital. With manager Matt Busby being one of those, the temporary manager was Jimmy Murphy - also, at that time, part time manager of Wales.
The background scenarios may have been vastly different but Cadoxton Barry's personnel situation was exactly the same - the team on the field at the end of this match being more than 50% teenagers. Playing a Cogan reserve side which included a good few Alliance League experienced players, their performances were no less than inspirational. That Utd beat Sheffield Wednesday in that FA Cup 5th round tie 3 - 0 whilst CB lost 1 - 0 takes nothing away from these youngsters' performances.
The game was pretty much end to end all through, the first incident of note coming in the 15th minute when Toby Dalton tipped an excellent Cogan drive over the bar. And only a minute later he was required to repeat the performance when a nippy right winger forced him to save at the base of the near post. Then CB had a good opportunity when Parry set Randall up in a good position, but he skewed his shot well wide.
Unfortunately the 29th minute saw a pivotal moment when key midfielder, Henderson, had to leave the field with a thigh injury to see Allen add to the number of teenagers on the field for Cadoxton Barry. However, Cogan's inability to take advantage saw their foul count go through the roof as the fleet footed youngsters gave them the runaround for lengthy periods.
But just when the odds on a 0 0 stalemate seemed high, another brilliantly saved Cogan blast at Toby Dalton rebounded back into play to allow Harris a simple drive into an open goal.
With 25 minutes still on the clock CB would have fancied their chances of getting at least one back, but credit goes out to a resolute Cogan defence as they nipped numerous CB build ups in the bud to take all three points back to their Cogan Leisure Centre base, just a couple of miles up the road from Cadoxton Barry's Bryn-Y-Don home.
Footnote
On his recovery Busby re-took the reins of Man Utd to see his, now nicknamed Busby Babes, make the F.A Cup Final only to lose 2 - 0 to Bolton Wanders - both goals coming from the legendary and original ankle biter, Nat Lofthouse.
